Ottawa’s Generation Gap
- The Government cut 50,000 jobs in the mid 1990’s & all but closed its doors to new hires
- Avg. age of Federal employees rose to 47years old from 39 in 1991; by 2000 the proportion of public servants age 35years or Younger was ½ the Canadian Avg.
- 40% of employees will be eligible to retire by 2010
- Senior managers/4500 people in executive ranks comprise the greyest of them all
- The Average age of Deputy ministers is 53
- The average retirement age is 58, as there are few 40-somethings ready to replace them, a leadership crisis looms
