Economic perspectives for your 1996 RRSP’s

In 1995, each and every member of The Prudential Family of funds had an outstanding year. Not only did all the funds have very attractive rates of return, but each also preformed extremely well when compared to others in the industry.

Best performance group

In the 1995 edition of his Ranga Chand’s World of Mutual Funds, Mr. Chand analyzed 1,100 mutual funds sold in Canada. The result of his independent analysis is that The Prudential Family of Funds emerged as the best performing group of Canadian funds, with six of seven qualifying funds in the ”heavy hitter“ category, and none in the ”under achievers“ category. (Since the book’s publication, the seventh qualifying fund has been rated as a ”heavy hitter“).

Growth to continue

As far as the Canadian economy is concerned, in 1996, we expect growth to continue at about three percent and inflation to remain under control. The United States, our largest trading partner, will continue to grow and as a result, demand for Canadian exports will remain strong. We also anticipate a rebound in housing and consumer spending. Interest rates should trend lower in 1996.

TSE 300 picking up steam

The TSE 300 composite index is still significantly behind the DOW, something that almost never happens at this stage of the economic cycle. However, with the uncertainty created by the Quebec Referendum now behind us, and indications from Finance Minister Paul Martin that the deficit reduction goals will be met, the TSE 300 is starting to pick up steam.

For 1996, we are bullish on the Canadian markets – both bond and stock, but especially stocks. Thanks to all our unit holders for the faith they have placed in The prudential and congratulations to our portfolio mangers for creating one of the best Family of Funds in Canada.
